Summary:

This presentation aims to help attendees gain an understanding of Fire Alarm Systems, and how the 2018 BCBC, 2019 VBBL and other standards impose requirements on the design, installation and testing of these systems and their components.

1. Understand when Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) are required.

2. Design requirements for FAS, and which standards are applied:

a) in various building types, sizes and occupancies,

b) for alarm supervision, and control panels, and

c) to select which type of fire alarm initiating device is appropriate for different cases.

3. FAS Installation Requirements

4. FAS verification, testing, and maintenance requirements

5. Practical testing and review requirements.

Michael is a Registered Architect that has been consulting on Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and throughout British Columbia since 2012. He is a Certified Professional (CP) registered with the City of Vancouver and Surrey since 2019. He regularly reviews and performs fire alarm system demonstrations, with multiple AHJs. Michael has over 12 years of experience in Building Code Compliance and Life Safety and has worked on a variety of new and existing complex buildings used for health care, residential, institutional, commercial, industrial, assembly, and mixed-use occupancies.
